The Joy of Fly-fishing on a Freestone River

Jun 7, 2017 -- Posted by : admin

Fly-fishing on a freestone river is an experience both unique and intoxicating. So unlike the dam controlled, or lake-fed rivers of much of the rest of the country, the beautiful, but ever changing nature of freestone rivers has drawn anglers back to the mountains of Grand County time and time again. Much of the land for sale in Colorado is endowed with freestone rivers.

Fed by melting snow which has seeped through the rocky strata to form small rivulets, then streams, then rivers, freestone water flows high and fast every spring as the snow melts and the high mountains shed their winter layers. Then the flow ebbs back throughout the summer, reaching its lowest level in the late fall and winter. After spring run-off, the water is mostly clear and cold, unless heavy high country rains wash in silt from the side canyons. And while this can be frustrating to the fly-tying waders on the bank, it is exactly this variability which promotes the diverse insect populations which sustain healthy trout populations.

In the freestone rivers of Colorado, undammed water flows naturally over loose stones that aid in oxygenating the water making them the perfect habitat for a variety of trout species including the native Cutthroat trout which is king. Coveted, clever, and beautiful, Cutthroat trout are a real treat for anglers. But they are not the only fish in the river. Other species such as Rainbows, Browns, and Brooks have been introduced and offer a variety of opportunities for casting with both wet and dry flies.

Check with your local fly-fishing guide shop to learn about seasonal hatches and which time of day tempts which trout.

Once you have familiarized yourself with the habits of your local trout, the only thing left to do is find your perfect fishing hole. Imagine if that perfect spot was right outside your back door. Many legacy ranches for sale are blessed to have a freestone river flowing through them, allowing you private access to the best these special waters have to offer.
