The Ultimate Colorado Bucket List

Sep 20, 2017 -- Posted by : admin

The term "bucket list" gets tossed around a lot these days. The phrase, of course, refers to the list of things a person wants to do or see before they die.

It might be a morbid way to express one's desires, especially when compared to terms such as "life list", but it gets the point across. Both phrases imply that time is limited. As such, it's time to seize the day and take in as much as you can.

The world is a big place, though. With limited time, it's important to choose destinations that offer plenty to do and see. Colorado State is one such place. In this post, we'll share some of our favorite Colorado bucket list items to help get you started on making your own. Let's get to it!

Making Your Colorado Bucket List

The State of Colorado is well known for the diversity of not only its landscape but culture as well. It holds the majority of the Southern Rocky Mountains, part of the Colorado Plateau, and the western edge of the Great Plains. The state is also home to a thriving music, food and drink scene.

Because of this wide variety of natural beauty and culture, Colorado has become a hot spot for tourists and outdoor adventure seekers. There's no limit on what one person can do and see in this state, but we've come up with some of the best attractions you'll want to include on your Colorado bucket list:

Stand in 4 States at Once

No Colorado bucket list would be complete without a visit to the Four Corners. Located on the southwest corner of Colorado, the Four Corners Monument marks the only spot in the United States where a person can stand in four states at one time.

The intersection includes the borders of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and of course, Colorado. Along the way there, don't forget to stop at one of the many archaeological sites to see how our ancestors lived.

Catch a Concert at Red Rocks

If you're a music buff, attending a concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre should be a priority for your Colorado bucket list. The naturally formed concert venue itself isn't the only special thing about this place, though. Surrounding the park is over 700 acres of wildlife, amazing geographical features, and even dinosaur fossils.

When you go to a show at the Red Rocks, you're not just there to listen to a concert. You're there to immerse yourself in a totally unique experience. In fact, Red Rocks is the only acoustically perfect amphitheater in the world that was formed naturally. A visit to Red Rocks is a must for any Colorado bucket list.

Take a Brewery Tour

Do you love beer? If you answered yes, Colorado has more to offer than you can handle responsibly.

With a thriving beer scene, Colorado has many unique brews to experience, along with the breweries themselves. Consider taking a brewery tour to see what the local microbreweries have to offer, or take a trip through the largest single-site brewery in the world. Just make sure you remember to cross it off your list!

Visit the Great Sand Dunes

The Colorado landscape has much to offer. From mountains to rivers to great plains, this state has it all. But did you know Colorado is also home to the tallest sand dunes in North America?

Round out your Colorado bucket list with a visit to the Great Sand Dunes National Park to experience one of the most diverse landscapes on the continent. Come explore the dunes, take a splash in the creek, or spend a weekend camping. The park is open 24 hours so don't forget to go stargazing!

Visit the Garden of the Gods

This park encompasses a sprawling 1,300 acres and has earned a National Natural Landmark designation. Like other locations in Colorado, the Garden of the Gods park is a unique meeting place for different natural environments.

Here the Great Plains meet the woodlands, only to be overshadowed by towering rock formations. The geography of the area offers a rare and comprehensive glimpse into the past.

Cruise Along the "Million Dollar Highway"

Your Colorado bucket list is coming along nicely, but it won't be complete until you take a cruise along the Million Dollar Highway. It's a fitting addition, too, because driving on this highway is especially risky due to steep dropoffs and absence of safety measures such as guardrails.

The highway was first constructed in the late 1880's and is considered part of the San Juan Skyway. This road runs for about 25 miles from Durango, through Ouray and Silverton, to Ridgway and climbs through three high-altitude mountain passes. Colorado has plenty of other scenic byways to choose from, though, just in case you don't want to risk your life.

Relax in the Hot Springs

You shouldn't feel stressed when checking items off your Colorado bucket list. But if you need some help unwinding from your other adventures, try taking a dip in one of Colorado's hot springs! There are naturally occurring hot springs found throughout the Rocky Mountains. Some locations even feature amenities such as water slides.

Stand Exactly One Mile High

No, you can't get a mile high by visiting one of the local marijuana dispensaries. Instead, if you want to stand at an elevation of exactly one mile, you'll have to travel to the steps of the state Capitol.

While Denver is known as the "Mile High City," you'll have to do some walking to actually get there. The exact spot is marked on the granite steps of the Capitol.

Aspen Food and Wine Classic

If your Colorado bucket list includes a last meal, make sure it's at the Aspen Food and Wine Classic. Every year, the world's greatest chefs and winemakers meet in Aspen for the best culinary event in the nation. The Food and Wine Classic offers an exclusive opportunity to taste the work of the best chefs in the world, and you better believe there's a good wine pair included, too.
